Cadmium is available as plate, ingot, rod, bar, sheet, wire, pellet, granule and so on. It's a soft, malleable, ductile, bluish-white metal.

 

The British Geological Survey reports that in 2001, China was the top producer of Cadmium with almost one-sixth of the world's production, closely followed by South Korea and Japan.

China's refinery production of Cadmium reached an estimated 9,000 metric tons in 2023, making it the leading Cadmium producing country worldwide. This was followed by South Korea, but by a wide margin, with a refinery Cadmium production volume of 4,000 metric tons that year.

 

Cadmium is primarily consumed for the production of rechargeable nickel cadmium batteries; other end uses include pigments, coatings, and plating. Solar cell manufacturing has also become another significant market for cadmium. Cadmium telluride thin-film photovoltaics are an alternative to the traditional silicon-based solar cells and are a preferred photovoltaic technology for commercial rooftop applications and for large-scale, ground-mounted utility systems.

Batteries


In 2009, 86% of Cadmium was used in batteries, predominantly in rechargeable Nickel-Cadmium batteries. It has a nominal cell potential of 1.2V.

 

Nuclear Technology

Cadmium is used in the control rods of nuclear reactors, acting as a very effective neutron poison to control neutron flux in nuclear fission. When Cadmium rods are inserted in the core of a nuclear reactor, Cadmium absorbs neutrons, preventing them from creating additional fission events, thus controlling the amount of reactivity.

 

Semiconductors


Cadmium is an element in some semiconductor materials. Cadmium sulfide, Cadmium selenide, and Cadmium telluride are used in some photodetectors and solar cells. HgCdTe detectors are sensitive to mid-infrared light and used in some motion detectors.

Forged ingots are cast using our stationary casting system, which is specifically designed to fill the ingots with non-turbulent flow to avoid the formation of harmful metal oxide films and inclusions.

Controlled solidification to ensure good macro organization, no secondary shrinkage, and sufficient ingot top waste to completely remove the primary tube resulting from the feed solidification shrinkage.

 

The cast product is transformed into the forged product.

The conversion of cast products to forged products requires controlled preheating to high temperatures, where the material can be thermoformed using a variety of processes.

These include press, hammer and rotary forging, strip and bar rolling, extrusion and closed die forging and ring rolling. Final products include bars(round, flat, square), stepped shafts, boss forgings, rings, blocks and closed-die shapes for complex shapes.

Forged products have higher sturdiness and integrity than cast products, and have higher mechanical strength and resilence.
